Lithium-ion battery Recycling
Awarded for
Company
Primobius is a joint venture between Australian sustainable technology company Neometals Ltd and Germany’s SMS group, a global leader in metallurgical plant engineering. Headquartered in Hilchenbach, Germany, Primobius specializes in the recycling of lithium-ion batteries using an advanced, sustainable process.
The company operates a commercial-scale plant and offers modular recycling solutions to partners worldwide. By recovering valuable materials like lithium, nickel, cobalt, and copper, Primobius plays a key role in building a circular economy for batteries and reducing the environmental impact of electric mobility.

HOW THE INNOVATION WAS INVENTED
Primobius’ recycling process was developed from extensive research and testing by Neometals. It began with laboratory-scale work and evolved through pilot and demonstration phases before commercialization. The technology combines mechanical shredding and hydrometallurgical refining to maximize material recovery with minimal environmental impact. Supported by SMS group’s engineering expertise, the process was scaled to industrial level and meets the highest environmental and safety standards, offering a reliable solution for the growing challenge of end-of-life lithium-ion batteries.

Benefit
Primobius creates strong ecological value by reducing battery waste, minimizing pollution, and recovering scarce raw materials. Economically, it strengthens local supply chains, lowers costs by reusing materials, and reduces reliance on volatile global mining markets. Socially, the company contributes to job creation, innovation, and compliance with environmental regulations. By enabling circular battery production, Primobius supports the transition to clean energy and helps industries and governments meet climate goals and sustainability targets.
